Supportive Transportation has years of experience in contracting with Private and Charter schools. Charter schools in the United States are required to provide transportation for students with disabilities to and from school, as long as the student resides within a certain distance from the school. The distance requirement can vary by state, but generally, it is within two miles for secondary students and one and a half miles for elementary students. Charter schools may also provide transportation to students who live within a certain distance from the school if walking is deemed a safety hazard by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
For students with disabilities who require specialized transportation, charter schools are required to provide this service at no cost to the parent. This includes transportation to and from school, as well as to and from other educational programs. The charter school must ensure that the transportation provided is safe, efficient, and meets the needs of the student.
